The Kansas City Royals today have acquired catcher Manny Pina and outfielder Tim Smith from the Texas Rangers in exchange for right-handed pitcher Danny Gutierrez. Pina, 22, was hitting .259 with 17 doubles, one triple, eight home runs and 42 RBI in 86 games for Frisco (AA). The April Minor League Player of the Month in the Rangers organization was selected as the starting catcher for the South Division in the Texas League All-Star Game. Regarded as an excellent defensive catcher, Pina this season was invited to the Rangers Major League Spring Training camp. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound right-handed hitter from Barquisimeto, Venezuela, signed with the Rangers as a non-drafted free agent on September 30, 2004. The 23-year old Smith began the 2009 season with Bakersfield (A Advanced) before being promoted to Frisco (AA) in early June. Smith batted .333 with five doubles, four home runs, 19 RBI, seven stolen bases and an on-base percentage of .413 in 35 games with the California League club before compiling a .309 mark with nine doubles, three homers, 32 RBI and eight steals in 36 games for Frisco. A native of Toronto, Canada, the 6-foot-3, 225-pound left handed hitter and thrower was selected by Texas in the seventh round of the 2007 draft out of Arizona State University, where in his only season with the Sun Devils he helped lead the squad to the College World Series. The corner outfielder is currently in North Carolina training with Team Canada for the 2009 Baseball World Cup in Germany later this month. The 22-year old Gutierrez was 1-0 with a 1.65 ERA in eight games, four starts, for Wilmington (A Advanced). The right-handed pitcher out of Los Angeles was originally selected by the Royals in the 33rd round of the 2005 draft.

Dodgers Make Shocking Trade For Thome, Garland

Oct 7, 2014 4:07 PM

The Dodgers completed a last-minute roster makeover before Monday night's deadline, acquiring Chicago White Sox slugger Jim Thome and Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Jon Garland. Both players will be eligible for postseason play. In return, the White Sox will receive Minor League infielder Justin Fuller. The D-backs will receive a player to be named, who, according to several Dodgers, will be Tony Abreu, but Abreu needs to first clear waivers. Abreu once was considered a top infield prospect, but his progress was stalled by three years of injuries. The right-handed Garland, 29, moves into a rotation that has struggled to find a fifth starter all season and has been further weakened by the loss of Hiroki Kuroda, who was hit on the head by a line drive.
